South East Asian Games Champion

The Philippines won over Indonesia 2-0 in the championship game of the 2011 Southeast Asian Games Baseball competition. A big win for the Philippines. A bigger win for the players who even weeks before the tournament were not sure to make it.

Darwin de la Calzada pitched 9 solid shutout innings to get the win. It was a pressure packed game for the Philippines as the first 6 innings went scoreless. Finally the Philippine batters pulled through in the sixth inning with Tata Empasis hit to center field scoring Jot Angeles. In the 8th inning a hit by Jonash Ponce scored Fongs Rances to give the Philippines a two run cushion.

IBAF World Rankings 2011

In the recent world rankings of baseball teams we found the Philippines ranking number 28- one step behind Indonesia. Thailand ranked #22. An interesting ranking was Pakistan #21.

The rankings give weight to major world wide events such as the World Baseball Classic, World Cup, Olympics. Continental events earn points subject to the number of top ten ranked teams participating. The American region (COPABE) and Asian region (BFA) earn maximum points because they meet the requirement of three top ten teams. Europe gets half the points because they have just one top ten team- Netherlands. The Southeast Asian Games yields one forth the points with no top ten teams.
