2012 UAAP BASEBALL
Big Day at Rizal Memorial
La Salle 7 UP 1
Both teams were more or less evenly matched on hits. But La Salle bunched them early scoring four in the first inning and two in the second. Carly Laurel recovered very well from several pitching jams a long the way for a complete game.
UST vs Adamson
An important game for both teams. A loss for UST would effectively close the door for the Tigers this season. Adamson wanted to win to strengthen their final four bid. The Falcons took an early lead 5-3.
UST recovered in the 6th inning with six runs to grab the lead 9-6. Adamson fought back in the ninth inning bunching walks and hits to score three runs to tie the game 9-9. UST finally clinched the game on a walk off walk. Final score: UST 10 Adamson 9.
Ateneo vs NU
Ateneo needed to bounce back from their loss to Adamson on Thursday. NU lost to Ateneo and La Salle in the first round. The Bulldogs have found their bearings with two wins over UST and one over Adamson. The Blue Eagles sent in their ace Adrianne Bernardo. NU countered with their ace Aris Oruga. Ateneo took the first lead with two runs in the top of the first. The Bulldogs countered with one run in the first and two in the second. NU added two more runs in the 8th. Catcher Alfredo Olivares led the NU attack with two key RBI hits. Oruga recovered from a shaky first inning with one of his best pitching performances this season. Final score: NU 5 Ateneo 2.

UAAP Baseball First Round
Ateneo swept the first round of the 2012 UAAP Baseball Championship with a win over arch rival La Salle 8-4. Observers were quick to bring up the possibility of a clean sweep bringing a first ever baseball championship for Ateneo.
The Blue Eagle team has certainly been the most powerful offensive team so far. Their first four batters- Adrianne Bernardo, Kevin Ramos, Charles Catangui and Matt Laurel all rank among the top hitters in the league. This group has been supported by Paco Tantuico and Dio Remollo. The only potential weakness is in their pitching as Ateneo has shown early over reliance on Adrianne Bernardo. Bernardo has had some support with quality innings from Tantuico.
La Salle was greatly affected in their match against Ateneo by critical errors. The quality of their pitching staff has shown through. Four pitchers have been rotated, Carlos Munoz, Carly Laurel, Paolo Mallari and Basti Uychico. Only the loss to Adamson showed a potential gap in pitching. No other team has this depth. Jay Laurel and Paolo Mallari have lead the hitting but the rest of the team will have to do its share for La Salle to have a shot at the championship.
National University, the pre tournament favorite in 2011 also has pitching depth. Aris Oruga pitched two consecutive shut outs, 2-0 against Adamson and 3-0 against UST. He now merits strong consideration as the league's best pitcher after this performances. But NU coach Saki Bacarisas will have spread the work load among his other key pitchers- Gante and Turaray. NU hitters have been quiet up to now. Philippine team players Alfredo Olivares and Ramsey Alipio along with Bryan Lumbres and Jezreel Rosita have to get their bats going.
UST seems to have lost its way after losing the first game to La Salle in extra innings. A 2-3 record certainly indicates they still have a chance but they are barely hanging in. Their key pitchers Amber Plaza and Irvin Tuazon are doing a great job but in this league two reliable pitchers are not enough. At this point they appear to be overworked. The Golden Tigers' bats, Arvin Plaza, Kasulhay Argel and Nikko Reyes have not been making noise at this point.
Adamson was not expected to contend with their young but promising team. But their pitchers have been delivering. Their hitting, particularly in their win over La Salle, has delivered, but failed in their 2-0 loss to NU.

Philippine Team Pitching
There was a heavy reliance by head coach Egay de los Reyes on Darwin de la Calzada during the 2011 Southeast Asian Games. Out of the total 43 innings pitched by the Philippine team de la Calzada pitched 21 innings. He pitched two complete games. One in the first game against Thailand. Then the Gold Medal game against Indonesia. He also pitched 3 innings against Indonesia in the last pool game.
To de los Reyes and the rest of the pitching staff it is not fair to say there was too much reliance on de la Calzada. The rest of the pitching staff also performed very well. Ironically only de la Calzada allowed runs in the competition- 2 in the first game against Thailand. After that no mre runs were scored.
If there was one big advantage for the Philippines in the competition it was the depth of pitching that was brought to Palembang. A total of six pitchers saw action for the Philippines. Charlie Labrador and Jonjon Robles pitched in the first game against Indonesia. Eighteen year old right hander Carlos Munoz, Vladimir Equia and Labrador pitched a combined one hitter against Vietnam. Romeo Jasmin, Robles and Labrador held Malaysia to no runs.
Pitching highlighted the advanced status of Philippine baseball against its regional rivals.
